Recently, a high-tech startup company dedicated to enabling energy neutrality in modern commercial and residential real estate has installed a new type of device at a Dutch bank’s headquarters, which is the world’s first commercial and completely transparent Solar power windows.
This type of window is called PowerWindows (probably solar power windows and the like). The solar panels on the windows are mounted at a specific angle, so that the reflected sunlight can be efficiently converted into solar energy. “Large commercial real estate consumes a lot of energy,†says Ferdinand Grapperhaus, co-founder of the Physee company. “If you want these buildings to be energy-neutral, the roof area alone is It is not enough. Therefore, activating the exterior wall of a building will greatly contribute to the energy neutrality of the building."
According to Glapphaus, this window can produce 8 to 10 watts of power. "Every square meter allows the user to charge the phone twice a day," he told Live Science.
The first solar window produced by Physee was announced in June in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. At that time, they installed 323 square feet (about 32 square meters) of PowerWindows for the head office of Holland's largest bank, Rabobank. The bank’s staff can charge their smart phones on the window's USB port, which is almost one of the most basic power requirements of the modern society.
In addition to co-operative banks, many other buildings in the Netherlands are already waiting in line to try this new type of solar technology, and this technology has also helped Physee win a place in the 2017 World Economics and Technology Forum.
At the end of June, the headquarters of Postcode Lottery in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, also deployed this new technology. After that, Physee will continue to move forward with its first large-scale project: installing 19,000 square feet (about 1800 square meters) of solar windows in a large new residential area in Amsterdam.
Physee has been working hard to develop a second-generation new technology that will more than triple PowerWindows's power. The surface of the second-generation product will be coated with a special material that converts the irradiated visible light into a near-infrared light that will then be transmitted to the solar cells at the edge of the window.
"It works like 'Nightlight'," Glapphaus said. "The difference is that the latter emits a green band and it emits a near-infrared band."
This special material is a rare earth metal. When Glapphaus studied at Delft University of Technology in 2014, together with his friend Willem Kestelo discovered that this metal has the ability to convert broad-spectrum light into near-infrared light. "Over time, due to the development of solar cells, our efficiency has been further improved. But this is also because of economies of scale." Glapphaus said, "Now we are looking for landmark projects around the world. Prove that a large building can also adopt an energy-neutral aesthetic approach."
Physee is not only one of the 30 early technology pioneers at the 2017 World Economics and Technology Forum, but has also been selected as a technological invention that has the potential to change the world. “Ten years ago, sustainable development was not a matter seriously considered by venture capitalists, governments and big companies,†said Glapphaus. “But in the past three years, what I’ve seen is the increasing responsibility of the company. With more and more support, venture capitalists are becoming more and more interested."
