Buying environmentally friendly paints

At present, when you buy paint, you choose more environmentally friendly paints, but there are some keywords for purchasing environmentally friendly paints, but most of them do not understand. The following small series introduces you to the key words of purchasing environmentally friendly coatings.

VOC

VOC is an abbreviation for Volatile Organic Compound. VOC is an important environmental indicator for coatings. Countries have strict control standards. One of the development directions of coatings is to develop high-performance, low-VOC products. During the film formation process, a large amount of organic matter is volatilized, and many of them are harmful to the human body. The State stipulates in the Standard for Limits of Toxic and Hazardous Substances in Interior Finishing Materials (GB 18582-2001) that the VOC limit value is ≤200g/L. And in the newly promulgated environmental protection industry standards (water-based coatings (HJ/T201-2005)): interior wall coatings including primers, VOC limit value ≤ 80g / L.

TDI

TDI, known as toluene diisocyanate, is the main raw material for the production of polyurethane coatings. TDI is easily vaporized and volatilized. When applying polyurethane paint, the free TDI in the paint will slowly evaporate into the air. The high content of free TDI is A highly toxic inhalation poison, which has accumulation and latent properties in the human body. It has a strong stimulating effect on the skin, mucous membranes and respiratory system of the human body. In severe cases, it can cause bronchitis, asthma and even suffocation. Internationally, there is a strict requirement for the content of free TDI in polyurethane paints, which is less than 0.5%. The current requirement for free TDI in two-component polyurethane varnish in our country is that the first-class product must be below 2%. This kind of polyurethane paint containing a large amount of free TDI not only causes harm to the human body, but also chemically reacts with the latex paint to make the wall surface unevenly yellow, affecting the appearance and decorative effect.

Benzene

Benzene compounds are mainly volatilized from paint. Benzene, toluene and xylene are indispensable solvents in paints. Among them, benzene is the most toxic. Benzene is currently banned because it is extremely harmful to humans. Benzene is listed as an extremely dangerous grade in GB5044-85 and is a human carcinogen. Inhalation of benzene above 4000ppm for short periods of time in addition to mucosal and pulmonary irritation, the central nervous system also has an inhibitory effect, accompanied by headache, vomiting, gait instability, coma, convulsions and arrhythmia.

Heavy metal

In the paint, some of the resin, pigment or drier has the presence of soluble heavy metals, which can cause harm to the human body when it comes into contact with heavy metal-containing paints. Heavy metals can damage the body's hematopoietic proteins and immerse them in the body for a long time, which is easy to cause cancer.

Formaldehyde

Some of the additives used in the coating (such as mildew fungicides) will have free formaldehyde. Free formaldehyde can irritate the eyes, throat, chest, etc., long-term inhalation will destroy some of the body's tissues, reducing the body's immunity. According to national standards, the free formaldehyde of the paint should be less than or equal to 100mg/kg.
