Sony Energy plans to further expand

According to Sony’s official website and internal information, Sony’s headquarters revealed on July 29th that Sony’s energy components company (abbreviation: Sony Energy) has cumulatively shipped 5 billion lithium batteries in the past 25 years, and Sony Energy will further develop its business and expansion. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries (abbreviation: Lithium-ion batteries) have become an integral part of people's lives from smart phones and tablet computers to highly concerned drones and solar-powered storage devices.

In May 1991, Sony Energy Components (SEND) became the first company in the world to use lithium batteries for mobile phones. Through nearly a quarter century of operation, as of April 2015, Sony Energy Components has cumulatively shipped 5 billion lithium batteries.

At Sony, the battery business started with Sony Eveready. Sony Yongbiao is a joint venture established with Union Carbide Corp in 1975. In 1986, the joint venture was dissolved and renamed "Sony Energytec". Under the leadership of Keizaburo Tozawa, then the company's development, the development of rechargeable batteries was carried out. This is also the long-cherished wish of the company’s founders, Mr. Toshihide and Mr. Morita. In order to achieve higher security, greater capacity and longer service life, the company has overcome many difficulties. In February 1980, it announced that the world's first lithium rechargeable batteries have entered the development and commercialization.

In May 1991, the model of the rechargeable battery that was designed and installed on the mobile phone (the phone was very different from the current mobile phone) was put on the market for the first time in the world. In 1992, this technology was applied to the "CCD-TR1" 8mm camera. Mass production was also started in the new building of the Koriyama Plant. Ms. Xi Meixu was the executive vice president of Sony Corporation and won the "Charles Stark Draper Prize" in 2014. He led the company to open up a new production line and developed new materials. , further improve the performance of the battery. Since then, the sales of lithium batteries have continued to expand, reaching 5 billion units in April 2015.
