In May 1991, Sony Energy Components (SEND) became the first company in the world to use lithium batteries for mobile phones. Through nearly a quarter century of operation, as of April 2015, Sony Energy Components has cumulatively shipped 5 billion lithium batteries.
At Sony, the battery business started with Sony Eveready. Sony Yongbiao is a joint venture established with Union Carbide Corp in 1975. In 1986, the joint venture was dissolved and renamed "Sony Energytec". Under the leadership of Keizaburo Tozawa, then the company's development, the development of rechargeable batteries was carried out.
