Tobacco stalks resource utilization has a new way out

Recently, the innovative team for protection and utilization of biological resources in the tidal flat of the Institute of Tobacco Research, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences used microwave hydrothermal technology to achieve the rapid separation and extraction of non-structural polysaccharides and hemicellulose from tobacco straw. The research results provide theoretical support for the utilization of tobacco straw resources, and clarify the material basis for the application of tobacco straw biomass in deep fermentation, biofertilizer, biogas energy, and functional substance extraction. Related research results were published online in "Carbohydrate Polymers".

China is the world's largest tobacco growing country, and the output of tobacco leaf cultivation exceeds 40% of the world's total output. There is a large amount of straw waste produced after the tobacco leaves are harvested, and improper treatment will cause environmental pollution. Tobacco straw waste can be effectively used to protect the environment and increase the added value of crop cultivation.

The team found that under microwave hydrothermal conditions of 120-160 ° C, non-structural mono / polysaccharides can be separated with a maximum yield of 12.0%; the remaining straw residues were further hydrothermally treated and the temperature increased to 160-200 ° C. Hemicellulose is effectively degraded and separated with a maximum yield of 10.5%. With the increase of temperature, the molecular weight of hemicellulose produced by degradation drops from 143.5 kilodaltons to 13.25 kilodaltons. The main components are mixed components such as xylan, glucuronoxylan and xyloglucan. It became a single component mainly composed of xylan (up to 72.64%).
