The world's first commercial space laser communication system begins operation

According to reports, the "European Data Relay System-A" (EDRS-A) payload of the world's first commercial laser communication system has begun to serve the "Sentinel" series of satellites. The EDRS-A was successfully launched on January 30, 2016.

The EDRS was jointly developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus Defence under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mechanism, including laser communication links for inter-satellite communications and microwave communication links for satellite communications. The maximum inter-satellite transmission rate can reach 1.8 Gbit/s.

In addition to EDRS-A, the dedicated satellite EDRS-C will be launched in 2017 and the EDRS-D satellite will be launched in 2020 to realize global data relay service. The data acquired by geostationary satellites such as Sentinel and airborne platforms can be relayed to ground end users in near real time, improving natural disaster monitoring and response capabilities; encrypting transmission services for government and security departments; and enabling users to send commands to satellites .

Space laser communication has high-speed real-time, high-capacity and confidentiality stability. EDRS will not only meet the growing demand for spatial data transmission rates, transmission volumes and real-time performance of European space activities, but will also free Europe from dependence on non-European ground stations and maintain strategic independence of space communications.
