Variety Selection
Choose a late-maturing pepper variety with strong growth potential, high heat resistance during the early stage, good cold tolerance, strong disease resistance, adaptability, fast fruit setting, concentrated yield, glossy appearance, thick flesh, dark green color, and large horn shape.
Sowing at the Right Time
In mid-July to early August, plant about 100 grams of Daejeon pepper seeds. Sow the seeds in nutrient pots, placing 2-3 seeds per pot, and cover them with a thin layer of nutrient soil after sowing.
Shade Seedling
It is best to use small arch sheds and shade nets for seedling cultivation. Alternatively, you can use straw or bamboo curtains to create shade. On rainy days, cover the shed with plastic film to prevent rain damage. After the rain, remove the cover and provide shade during the noon hours.
Seedbed Management
Select a plot that has not been used for planting in the previous season. After preparing the seedbed, kill pests by spraying or using soil treatment. Cover the bed with a plastic sheet for 2-3 days to eliminate underground pests. After 3 days, remove the plastic sheet and sow the seeds. After sowing, spray Greenheng No. 1 diluted 300 times over the seedbed. When the seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, spray Greenheng No. 2 diluted 600-800 times to control diseases. For insect pests, use 25% fast-killing solution diluted 500-2000 times. Keep the seedbed neither too dry nor too wet. When the pepper seedlings have two true leaves, thin out the seedlings, keeping one strong seedling per pot, and water with diluted human or animal manure.
Timely Transplanting
When the pepper seedlings are about 30-35 days old, transplant them from mid-August to early September. It is best to transplant on a sunny day after 4 PM or on cloudy days before rain. Plant approximately 4200-4500 plants per mu. Apply fertilizer to the seedbed and treat it with medicine to prevent root rot and blight. Use Greenheng root station No. 1 diluted 3000 times to pour into the roots during transplantation for better effects.
Applying Enough Fertilizer to the Field
The growth period and short-term yield of the anti-season pepper are brief, and the main yield comes from the flowers and fruits in October. Therefore, it's essential to apply base fertilizer. Apply 3000 kg of high-quality farmyard manure per acre, 2500 kg of mixed soil fertilizer, 50 kg of compound fertilizer, 150 kg of cooked cake fat, 100 kg of ammonium bicarbonate, and 1 kg of boron fertilizer.
Daejeon Management
Apply fertilizer once 5-6 days after planting, using 1000 kg of livestock manure or 5 kg of urea. 15 days after transplanting, during the flowering and fruit-setting period, it is a critical time for fruit production. Apply 10 kg of urea or 50 kg of cake fertilizer, or 30 kg of compound fertilizer, and spray 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate every 10 days. At the same time, control the plant height by spraying 5 g of paclobutrazol in 15 kg of water, but do not re-spray. Keep the flowers moist during the flowering and fruiting period. High temperatures may cause flower drop; use pepper spirit fountain, spraying 6-8 grams of 60-80 kg of water to promote fruit set. Avoid spraying large amounts of liquid on leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits to prevent root rot and blight. Use Greenheng No. 1 diluted 3000 times for irrigation, which has a good effect. For diseases like downy mildew and anthracnose, spray Greenheng No. 2 diluted 600-800 times. For virus infections, use virus A or K 600 times. For tobacco budworm and aphids, use Kuaishaling or 100-200 g of fenpropathrin for double prevention. In late October, remove the top of the branches to promote faster fruiting and enlargement. After November, temperatures begin to drop, so install mid-level scaffolding before setting up the greenhouse. When night temperatures fall below 15°C, cover with insulation film. If temperatures drop below 8°C, cover with a small greenhouse film or plastic sheet to protect against frost. Seal the sides of the shed and ventilate during sunny afternoons. Maintain daytime temperatures between 20°C and 25°C, and nighttime temperatures between 8°C and 10°C. By November, the greenhouse mainly focuses on drying.
Pepper is generally available on the market in mid-October, with sales starting as early as October 1st. As long as the insulation, disease prevention, and preservation techniques in the greenhouse are properly managed, it is possible to harvest 1000-1500 kg per mu before and after the Lunar New Year.
