Rotary type: In this design, the piston moves in a rotational motion. This type is also known as dry-drying. The number of rotors can vary, and the shape of the cylinders differs accordingly. The rotary type includes various subtypes such as rotor-type, screw-type, and sliding-type compressors.

Shanghai Air Compressor Company shares an insightful history of air compressors.

Many people believe that Atlas Air Compressor Company built the world's first air compressor, but that’s not entirely accurate. In fact, China was one of the earliest nations to use air compressors. Here's a brief chronicle of air compressors to help you understand why:

Before 1500 AD, the wooden bellows used during the Shang Dynasty in China already had key components of modern air compressors—such as cylinder, piston, piston ring, and air valve.

In 1640, Germany produced the first mechanical vacuum pump, which is considered the origin of modern air compression technology.

Around 1800, the UK developed the first single-stage reciprocating air compressor with an exhaust pressure of 1.38 MPa.

In 1829, the UK introduced the first two-stage reciprocating air compressor with intercooling.

In 1878, Swiss company Buckhardt Maschinenfabrik AG launched its first air compressor equipped with a control valve for gas distribution.

By 1888, a pneumatic system in a French city already had 14 reciprocating air compressors, with a total power of 1500 kW.

In 1902, Ingersoll-Rand Co. created the first mobile reciprocating air compressor.

In 1907, Sweden’s Atlas Company introduced its first mobile reciprocating air compressor, combining an internal combustion engine with a single-stage compressor on a shared crankshaft—this marked the world’s first integrated motorcycle compressor.

In 1930, the Monodloc mobile air compressor was introduced. It was essentially a diesel-powered unit, featuring a vertical, 4-cylinder, two-stroke engine directly driving a 2-cylinder, two-stage, single-acting compressor.

In 1931, the U.S.-based Morthington Corp. developed its first opposed air compressor, which later evolved into the BDC symmetric balanced series.

In 1934, German manufacturer KSB produced the first oil-free lubricated reciprocating air compressor. That same year, Wurzen Machinery Manufacturing and Foundry introduced a similar model using graphite rings for sealing.

At the end of 1935, Sulzer Brothers Ltd. manufactured the first labyrinth cylinder oil-free lubricated air compressor for a Zurich brewery.

In 1952, the Shenyang Air Compressor Factory successfully produced its first compressor with a volumetric flow rate of 6 m³/min and an exhaust pressure of 0.6865 MPa. In 1957, it developed the L-100/8 large-scale air compressor.

Between 1959 and 1960, the First Ministry of Machinery Industry, Hefei General Machinery Research Institute, Xi’an Jiaotong University, and Shenyang Gas Compressor Factory collaborated on the development of the first L-type air compressor series in China.

In 1960, Sweden’s Atlas Company introduced the DT4 short-stroke air compressor and the ER8 low-power air compressor.

Electric Valve

An electronic flow valve is a valve that controls fluid flow through electronic signals. It uses built-in sensors and microcontrollers to accurately adjust the flow of fluid according to system requirements. Its working principle is based on a feedback control mechanism. By monitoring the pressure, flow and other parameters of the fluid, it automatically adjusts the valve opening to maintain the set flow value.
