Causes and Preventive Measures of Producing Coarse Crystal Rings in Aluminum Products

The formation mechanism and influencing factors of the coarse-grained rings are relatively complex, and no unified view has yet been formed. The reason may be that the extruded aluminum extrusions are not uniformly deformed, the outer layer metal is subject to mold wall friction, the physical deformation is large, and the dirt in the tail end is gradually entered into the outer layer. During the heat treatment, the surface layer of the product is heated at a high temperature, and the holding time is high. The long, combined with the inclusion of impurities into the nucleus, easy to grow, so that the outer metal grains become significantly larger.

To prevent the production of coarse-grained rings from finished aluminum products:

1) The reverse extrusion method is used to deform the metal uniformly and it is not easy to form a coarse crystal ring.

2) Adding a small amount of manganese, iron, and titanium in the alloy can reduce or eliminate the coarse-grained rings.

3) Using high-temperature extrusion to reduce the depth of the coarse-grained ring in the single-phase region of the alloy.

4) Properly increase the size of the extrusion residue to avoid leaving non-metallic inclusions in the residue to the end of the product.

5) Keep the inner wall of the squeeze tube clean and smooth to form a complete aluminum sleeve to reduce friction during extrusion.

6) Avoid excessive quenching temperatures.

7) Use porous die extrusion.
