Personal lightning protection, the 17th National Congress

Lightning storms are extremely common in China, and the economic damage and casualties caused by lightning disasters are becoming increasingly severe. These events are characterized by frequent occurrences, sudden appearances, wide coverage, serious consequences, and significant social impact. Lightning has become one of the major meteorological disasters, ranking just behind storms, floods, and geological hazards, and it poses a serious threat to public safety, lives, and property. Personal lightning protection is crucial during thunderstorms. Here are some important safety tips: 1. Avoid staying on mountain tops, ridges, or tall buildings. 2. Stay away from metal gates, fences, clotheslines, overhead metal structures, and railway tracks. 3. If possible, quickly seek shelter in a building equipped with lightning protection systems or in vehicles with metal bodies. If not, crouch down, keep your feet together, and bend forward to minimize your height. This reduces the risk of step voltage, as lightning current can spread across the ground, creating a potential difference between your feet. 4. Do not take shelter under large trees, telephone poles, billboards, or towers. Wet branches act like lightning rods, and touching these structures could result in a lightning strike. 5. Avoid being near water bodies such as rivers, lakes, seas, ponds, or canals. If you’re swimming or squatting, move quickly to a dry shelter. 6. Do not carry metal objects during a storm, as they can conduct electricity. Keep them at least 5 meters away and retrieve them only after the storm has passed. 7. Avoid touching lightning protection systems, water pipes, grounding wires, tree trunks, or any other conductive objects that might be charged by lightning. This helps prevent contact voltage or side flashes. 8. Do not use mobile phones outdoors during thunderstorms, as radio waves can also attract lightning. 9. When going out in a storm, wear rubber shoes for insulation. 10. Close windows and doors to prevent lightning from entering the room or spherical lightning from coming in. 11. In a house, stay away from metal water pipes connected to the roof. 12. Avoid taking showers, as even though modern homes have equipotential bonding, lightning current could still travel through the water and cause harm. 13. It’s best to avoid using phones or internet devices during thunderstorms. Unplug power cords, phone lines, and TV antennas to prevent lightning from entering through metal wires. A safer approach is to install surge protectors on power lines, telephone lines, and antenna feeds, along with proper grounding. 14. Keep your home dry. Repair any leaks promptly to avoid moisture-related risks. 15. Ensure that the insulating foot of electrical cords is properly grounded, and that the protective ground wire in electrical outlets is well connected. 16. Avoid hanging clothes or bedding near windows or doors to prevent them from being struck by lightning. 17. Avoid staying in open-air shelters, isolated gazebos, or grass huts without lightning protection. Be cautious around wires and avoid standing under lights—ideally, turn off the power or stop using electrical appliances. By following these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of lightning-related injuries and damage. Stay safe and informed during stormy weather.
