Personal lightning protection, the 17th National Congress

Lightning storms are common in China, and the economic damage and casualties caused by lightning disasters are becoming increasingly severe. These events are marked by their frequency, sudden occurrence, wide coverage, serious risks, and significant social impact. Lightning has become one of the most dangerous meteorological disasters, second only to storms, floods, and geological hazards, posing a serious threat to public safety and people's lives and property. Personal lightning protection is crucial, especially during thunderstorms. Here are some important safety tips: 1. Avoid staying on mountain tops, ridges, or tall buildings. 2. Stay away from metal gates, fences, clotheslines, overhead wires, and railway tracks. 3. If possible, quickly seek shelter in a building with proper lightning protection or in a vehicle with a metal body. If not, crouch down, keep your feet together, and lower your head to minimize the risk of step voltage. This is because lightning current can spread through the ground, creating a potential difference between your feet. 4. Do not take shelter under large trees, telephone poles, billboards, or towers. Wet branches can act as natural lightning rods, increasing the risk of being struck. 5. Avoid water bodies such as rivers, lakes, seas, ponds, and canals. If caught in the rain, move quickly to a dry shelter. 6. Do not carry metal objects during thunderstorms, as they can conduct electricity. Keep them at least 5 meters away and retrieve them after the storm passes. 7. Avoid touching lightning protection systems, water pipes, electrical grounding lines, or tree trunks, as they may become charged during a lightning strike. 8. Do not use mobile phones outdoors, as radio waves can attract lightning. 9. Wear rubber shoes when going out in thunderstorms for better insulation. 10. Close windows and doors to prevent lightning from entering the room or spherical lightning from coming in. 11. In indoor spaces, stay away from metal water pipes and those connected to the roof. 12. Avoid taking showers, even in modern homes where pipes are usually grounded. Lightning can still travel through water and cause harm. 13. During thunderstorms, avoid using phones or internet devices. Unplug power cords, phone lines, and TV antennas to prevent lightning from entering through cables. Installing surge protectors on power, telephone, and antenna lines is a safe and effective solution. 14. Keep your home dry. Repair any leaks promptly to reduce the risk of electrical hazards. 15. Ensure that the insulating base of household power cords is properly grounded, and that the protective ground wire in sockets is well connected. 16. Avoid hanging clothes near windows or doors, as this could increase the risk of lightning strikes. 17. Do not stay in open areas like rain shelters, isolated gazebos, or grass huts without lightning protection. Be cautious around wires and avoid standing under light bulbs. It’s best to turn off electricity or stop using appliances during a storm. Taking these precautions can significantly reduce the risks associated with lightning and help keep you and your family safe during severe weather.
