Nokia's R&D of a prototype solar mobile phone is feasible but still challenging

According to foreign media reports, Nokia stated on its blog on Tuesday that it is feasible to install solar panels on the back of mobile phones to charge mobile phones, but it still faces many challenges. Nokia came to this conclusion after completing a study of the project.

Nokia stated that there is still a lot of work to be done before the introduction of a feasible and reliable solution. As part of the project, Nokia developed and tested a prototype of a solar-charged mobile phone, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach. Using the solar panels on the back of the phone, the phone can get enough power to stay on standby, but when talking on the phone, the time is very limited.

Nokia said that the biggest challenge is the limited size of the back of the phone, which limits the size of the solar panels and ultimately limits the amount of electricity the battery gets. Nokia said: “If the user is carrying a mobile phone outdoors, the panel can get more power, for example, the user can get a good effect by hanging the phone around his neck. However, the phone is not unobtrusive and easy to hang around his neck. , so we need other better solutions." Nokia did not say what better solutions to solve these problems.

Nokia tested its solar-charged mobile phone prototypes in southern Sweden, Kenya, the Arctic Circle and the Baltic Sea, and tested best in Kenya.

Charging mobile phones with solar energy is not a new concept. As early as 1997, Nokia launched its so-called first solar charging mobile phone. Recently, mobile phone makers such as Samsung and LG have also introduced solar charging smart phones. Previously, both Samsung and LG launched the Samsung S7550 Blue Earth and LG GD510 Pop solar charging phones in 2009 respectively.

Francisco Jeronimo, an analyst at market research firm IDC, said that many mobile phone manufacturers believe that they can use the public’s interest in environmentally friendly products to promote such phones. However, Gironimo believes that consumers are not willing to pay for additional solar panels, and this technology is still immature, so this kind of mobile phone is not yet a mainstream product.

Gironimo also stated that even if this technology is not yet perfect, but due to the lack of energy in some parts of the world, so the application of this technology is of far-reaching significance. (Editor: Zhao Hongwei)
