Europe Develops 20XX Future Aircraft: Open Orbit Flights

According to foreign media reports, the German Aerospace Center is developing a new type of space shuttle (SpaceLiner), which takes off from Europe and takes only 90 minutes to reach Australia on the other side of the globe. This scenario is indeed very attractive, but the key technology is still in the test and basic argumentation stage.


This new type of space flight, the maximum speed can reach 20 times the speed of sound! Landing can be done at an ordinary airport.

Flying like a space shuttle

The space shuttle designed by the German Aerospace Center was launched vertically like a space shuttle, using a rocket engine. After the initial stage of combustion, the reusable booster is separated from the orbiter. After another 8 minutes, the aircraft enters the taxi stage and the speed reaches 20 times the speed of sound. This space flight can carry 50 passengers.

Landing can be done on a regular airport runway just like a normal airplane. Martin Sippel, head of the project, said: "There are no examples of such aircraft today. We are now using computers for simulation studies."

Another very important question is how to cool it during the flight. During the high-speed gliding phase of the space flight, it will make strong friction with the atmosphere and the temperature can rise to 1800 degrees Celsius. The solution to the problem is to use an active cooling scheme to cool the aircraft's head and wingtips. When the temperature of the aircraft rises, water will turn out of the fine pores of the high-temperature ceramics to cool it.

It is reported that this is a long-term research project and will not be put into practical use until 2050. Once successfully developed, it is also possible to use flight aircraft to launch light satellites.
