Dalian Institute of Lithium Sulfur Battery Engineering Technology has made new progress

Recently, the advanced secondary battery research group led by researcher Chen Jian led by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made progress in the research and development of lithium-sulfur battery engineering technology: research and development of high-performance nanostructured carbon-sulfur composites, high-sulfur loading Sulfur positive pole piece and large capacity lithium-sulfur battery technology. After evaluation by the pilot project team, the mass specific energy of the single-cell battery with a rated capacity of 30 Ah has been developed to reach 520 Wh/kg. This is also the lithium-sulfur battery with the highest rated capacity and energy density reported so far. At the same time, the research group also made new progress in the lithium-sulfur battery grouping technology. The specific energy of the 1kWh lithium-sulfur battery pack that was developed by a third-party test reached 330Wh/kg.

If calculated only by the mass of the active material, the theoretical mass specific energy of lithium-sulfur battery can reach 2600 Wh/kg, which is a kind of high specific energy secondary battery. In recent years, it has attracted extensive attention from domestic and foreign research institutions and enterprises. Innovative basic research work and technical solutions continue to emerge, but there are still few reported data on large-capacity lithium-sulfur cells. The research group further optimized the battery's key materials and preparation techniques, and the mass-to-energy ratio of lithium-sulfur batteries can reach three to four times the mass-to-energy ratio of currently commercial lithium-ion batteries. Applications for electric vehicles, energy storage of scale, aerospace, and robotics all place higher requirements on the energy density of secondary batteries. The current phase progress made by the research group has more clearly demonstrated lithium-sulfur batteries as future high energy densities. The important application value and prospect of secondary batteries. However, before realizing the large-scale practical application of lithium-sulfur batteries, it is still necessary to further overcome the technical bottlenecks such as battery cycle life, power density, and safety.
