Yuan Longping: Transgenic foods or affecting fertility people are not mice

Interview with the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and Yuan Longping, “Father of Hybrid Rice”: “The people are not mice”

Reporter Li Wei | Live coverage of the two sessions

Yuan Longping, 82 years old, claims to be "after 80." He said that when he became a "post-90s," the goal of producing 1000 kg per mu for super rice would certainly be achieved.

On the evening of March 4th, Beijing International Hotel, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Yuan Longping accepted an exclusive interview with China Economic Weekly. In the carpeted suite, Yuan Longping barefooted after the “80s” and threw himself into the documents and materials of a table, talking about super rice, grain prices, and genetically modified issues.

Yuan Longping, an outspoken Yuan does not worry that his words will “offend people”. “I am afraid of anything. I am so old and can’t even speak a few words.

Filling up with oil is not as good as supplementing farmers

At the two sessions this year, Yuan Longping’s proposal was “Recommendations on Food Prices”. The proposal stated that according to the Hunan Provincial Price Bureau survey statistics, in 2011, farmers planted rice per acre and removed the country’s grain subsidies. The net income was only 7.5 yuan.

"Thoroughly five, ah! Too few, poor farmers, poor farmers!" Yuan Longping said with excitement. "If farmers can't get the money, the peasants will not plant. They will abandon the cultivated land and go to work in the city. There are fewer and fewer people. Where does food come from?

From 2010, Yuan Longping visited several counties, townships, and villages in Hunan. He discovered that a large amount of cultivated land was abandoned and even used as a construction site and dump site. "Agricultural land is more valuable. Nowadays there are fewer and fewer arable land in the whole country. What can we do if there is not enough food? Where can we plant it?"

Yuan Longping worried that the red line of 1.8 billion mu of cultivated land could be broken. “The area of arable land is very small now. If we do not have good protection and the area of arable land decreases year by year, we will not have a way out.”

What worried Yuan Longping most was food prices. "Food is the treasure of the treasure, and food prices are the basis of price." On the one hand, once the price of food rises, it will lead to the whole body, which will lead to the rise of the entire price, and even cause social unrest. “So everyone says that food prices will not go up.” But on the other hand, “Low grain prices will hurt the farmers and affect the enthusiasm of farmers for grain production, and even affect the country’s food security.”

Therefore, Yuan Longping suggested that the government should purchase farmers’ grain at a higher price, “greatly increase the enthusiasm and income of farmers for grain production, preserve the basic interests of farmers, and save cultivated land.” Then they sell grain at parity, “guaranteing people’s livelihood, guaranteeing The average daily life level of the people guarantees the stability of the country’s food security and the price.” If the government subsidizes the difference, it can “take care of both ends”.
