Use of different plastic products

Plastic products commonly come with a triangular recycling symbol, usually found on the bottom of containers. This symbol indicates the type of plastic used and its safety for different applications. Understanding these markings helps you make safer choices when using plastic items. 1. **PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)** – Often seen in water bottles and soda bottles. It can withstand temperatures up to 70°C, but it's not suitable for high heat. When exposed to heat or stored for long periods, harmful substances like DEHP may leach out. Avoid leaving PET bottles in hot cars or using them to store alcohol or oily substances. 2. **HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)** – Found in medicine bottles, cleaning product containers, and some shampoo bottles. It can handle temperatures up to 110°C, but it’s not recommended for food storage due to difficulty in cleaning. HDPE is not recyclable and can become a breeding ground for bacteria if not properly cleaned. 3. **PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)** – Used in raincoats, plastic films, and storage boxes. It's flexible and inexpensive, but only safe up to 81°C. At higher temperatures, it can release toxic chemicals, which is why it's rarely used in food packaging. PVC is also not recyclable. 4. **LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene)** – Commonly used in cling wrap and plastic bags. It has poor heat resistance and can melt at around 110°C, potentially releasing harmful substances. Using LDPE in the microwave without removing it can increase the risk of health issues, including breast cancer and birth defects. Always remove plastic wrap before heating food. 5. **PP (Polypropylene)** – Seen in soy milk bottles, juice containers, and microwaveable meal boxes. It has a high melting point of 167°C, making it safe for microwave use. PP is reusable, but be cautious with lids, as they may be made from other plastics like PE. Remove the lid before microwaving. 6. **PS (Polystyrene)** – Used in disposable cups, foam takeout containers, and instant noodle bowls. It can handle both hot and cold temperatures but should never be placed in the microwave, as it can release harmful chemicals when heated. Understanding these plastic types helps you make informed decisions about how and when to use them safely. Always check the labels and follow guidelines to protect your health and the environment.
