In recent years, the lack of standardized warranty policies for home improvement materials has become a growing concern among consumers. Ms. Zhang recently faced an issue with her furniture, which was promised a five-year warranty. However, when a problem arose, she had to pay for on-site service fees to get it repaired. Similarly, Grandma Lee from Chaoyang District encountered difficulties with her toilet parts after the warranty period ended, leaving her to cover the repair costs herself. “I’m lucky that only a small part was broken,†she said. “But how can I be sure about the maintenance time?â€
This situation highlights a broader issue in the home improvement industry—without clear and consistent warranty standards, it's challenging for consumers to protect their rights. To better understand this, a reporter visited several stores and spoke with industry experts.
According to Zhang Ren, Deputy Secretary-General of the Residential Decoration Committee of the China Building Decoration Association, the warranty periods for different parts of home improvement projects vary. For example, electrical and plumbing systems typically come with a one-year warranty, while other components may have longer terms. However, these standards are not universally applied across the industry.
Furniture brands also differ in their warranty policies. Some offer a one-year warranty with lifetime maintenance, while others provide three or even five years of coverage. Despite these promises, many companies do not include them in formal contracts, leaving consumers vulnerable if issues arise later.
In the bathroom products market, warranty periods range from one to five years, but many retailers only agree to a one-year warranty in writing. This discrepancy often leaves customers confused about what they’re actually entitled to. Likewise, in the tile industry, most brands do not provide a specific warranty. Merchants often claim that breakage is considered an installation error, shifting responsibility away from the product itself.
Another common issue is the confusion between "warranty period" and "shelf life." While the warranty period refers to the time during which free repairs are offered, shelf life relates to the expected lifespan of the product. Understanding this distinction is crucial for consumers to avoid disputes later on.
To protect their rights, consumers should purchase from reputable stores and always request a warranty card. When signing a contract, they should carefully review the terms and ensure any special commitments from the seller are included in writing. As one store manager emphasized, clear documentation is essential to back up any future claims.
With the current lack of uniformity in warranty policies, it’s more important than ever for consumers to be informed and proactive in protecting their interests.
