
From the 1980s, when analog surveillance systems first emerged, to the digital revolution that followed, and now to the rapid rise of network-based video surveillance, the evolution of monitoring technology has been nothing short of revolutionary. In just two decades, it has transformed from a niche industry into a powerful force shaping security across China. With the rise of the internet and IP technology, countless companies have entered the market, but only those with strong technical foundations and clear vision have managed to stand out.
Today, we're witnessing a shift toward more intelligent, scalable, and user-friendly surveillance solutions. To better understand this transformation, we spoke with industry experts. Mr. He Housheng, Chief Technology Officer of a leading tech company, shared his insights on how the industry is evolving and what the future holds for video surveillance.
The journey of video surveillance can be divided into three key stages. The first generation was based on analog CCTV systems, which relied heavily on dedicated equipment like cameras, cables, and VCRs. While effective at the time, these systems had limitations in terms of image quality and long-term storage reliability.
The second generation introduced digital video recorders (DVRs), marking a step toward digitization. However, they were still largely analog in nature, with limited scalability and vulnerabilities in data protection. Disk failures and lack of redundancy made them less reliable over time.
Now, we are in the third generation: all-IP video surveillance systems. These systems offer significant advantages. They are easy to install, as cameras can connect directly to a network via Ethernet or wireless connections, making use of existing infrastructure. They are also highly scalable—adding more cameras is simple, and central servers can be upgraded without major overhauls. Remote access is seamless, allowing authorized users to monitor any camera from anywhere. Data protection is robust, with options like RAID, tape backup, and SCSI storage ensuring that footage remains safe even in the event of hardware failure.
In today's market, the focus is on improving the third-generation systems to make them more accessible and user-friendly. This means not only enhancing real-time performance and security but also ensuring that the system is intuitive and flexible. As these technologies become more mainstream, they’re no longer just for high-end businesses—they’re becoming tools that ordinary people can rely on daily.
