Development of aluminum alloy cable must not be blind

China's cable industry has an annual output value exceeding RMB 1 trillion, making it the world's largest producer of cables. However, despite its size, the industry is often described as "big but not strong." The sector faces significant challenges, including intense market competition, low-quality products, overcapacity, and shrinking profit margins. This situation has created a difficult environment for sustainable growth. In this context, aluminum alloy cables are emerging as a potential new export opportunity for the industry. With the introduction of national standards, the market could experience explosive growth. For an industry struggling with overcapacity and low profitability, aluminum alloy cables could serve as a lifeline. The concept of "aluminum replacing copper" has gained traction, and the development of aluminum alloy cables is seen as a viable solution to many of the industry's long-standing issues, such as chaotic competition and price wars. Although aluminum alloy cables are still in the early stages of development in China, they have shown rapid growth in recent years, signaling the possibility of a new investment boom. As the application of these cables expands and user acceptance increases, related products are gradually gaining market recognition. In 2012, China's annual output of aluminum alloy cables was approximately 2 billion yuan, with around 30,000 tons of aluminum alloy conductors produced, of which about 500 million yuan worth were exported. The cable industry has historically been plagued by overproduction and inefficiency. A notable example is the rapid expansion of tower construction. In 2008, there were 39 global towers, 26 of which were located in China, accounting for two-thirds of the total. By 2013, the number had grown to 78, with 100 VCV (vertical tower cross-linked) production lines nationwide. The annual output of these lines reached about 30,000 kilometers—three times the amount of high-voltage cables in China. Today, more than 100 domestic companies are investing in aluminum alloy cable projects. However, experts warn that if the market opens up too quickly, the industry may face another round of overexpansion. The past has shown that over-investment in areas like all-plastic cables, optical fiber cables, and CCV and VCV production lines led to severe overcapacity and financial losses. The rapid pace of development has often resulted in wasted resources. The outcome of a "swarm of bees" mentality is not always positive—it often leads to idle assets. Currently, some aluminum alloy cable companies operate at less than 40% capacity, with many machines left unused. As Jiang Huajun, General Manager of Far East Cable Co., Ltd., pointed out, blindly following trends comes at a high cost. Companies must be cautious and avoid repeating past mistakes. Entering the aluminum alloy cable market also brings several risks. First, the demand for aluminum is rising, and increased investment in aluminum-based projects could drive up prices. Second, users remain hesitant to fully adopt aluminum alloy cables, even though many industry experts support them. Third, China's cable industry standards lag behind those of Europe and other countries, creating a gap in quality control. Finally, technical limitations still affect the pass rate of aluminum alloy cables. It is crucial to prevent aluminum alloy cables from becoming the next industry suffering from overcapacity. Rational and strategic development is essential. Uncontrolled competition will only harm the industry and lead to further instability. As cable companies explore this new direction, they should approach it objectively and calmly, focusing on their own production structures, market trends, and long-term sustainability. By doing so, they can contribute positively to the future of China’s cable industry.
