Established a synthetic diamond testing center in Mumbai, India

On Friday, the Gem Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC) and the Gemological Institute of India (GII) attended the inauguration of the Mumbai Synthetic Diamond Testing and Resource Center (DDRC). This new facility represents a significant step forward in India's efforts to tackle the growing problem of counterfeit and synthetic diamonds entering the market. The establishment of DDRC underscores India’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its diamond industry and ensuring consumer trust. The DDRC is part of a broader initiative by India to collaborate with international diamond organizations in the fight against synthetic diamonds being passed off as natural ones. The center will be equipped with advanced tools for rapid detection of synthetic diamonds, helping to ensure that only genuine stones reach the market. This not only protects consumers but also supports the long-term health of the diamond trade. In addition to testing, the DDRC will serve as an educational hub, offering training on how to identify synthetic diamonds and operate testing equipment. It will also take over some functions previously handled by De Beers' global diamond sales division, signaling a shift toward a more independent and robust inspection system. The Indian diamond market faced significant challenges in the second half of 2013, with widespread confusion between real and synthetic diamonds. In November alone, two major Indian diamond companies were found to have imported large quantities of synthetic diamonds mixed with natural ones, causing serious concerns among industry players. Vipul Shah, Chairman of the GJEPC, emphasized that the creation of DDRC is a crucial move in addressing these issues. He stated that it not only helps eliminate fears about counterfeit diamonds but also reinforces the industry’s dedication to ethical practices. Varda Shine, Executive Vice President of Global Diamond Sales at De Beers, welcomed the development, saying that the DDRC will boost consumer confidence in the authenticity of diamonds and strengthen the supply chain. Industry analyst Aniruddha Lidbide pointed out that ethical standards are essential for the sustainable growth of the diamond sector. He noted that cities like Surat and Mumbai had suffered major losses due to fake diamonds recently. He urged the industry to recognize the importance of ethics and to avoid misleading consumers with low-cost synthetic stones. The DDRC, he added, is not just about setting up a testing system, but also about promoting responsible business values across the sector.
