On Friday, the Gem Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC) and the Gemological Institute of India (GII) were present at the inauguration of the Mumbai Synthetic Diamond Testing and Resource Center (DDRC). This new facility represents a significant step forward in India's efforts to tackle the growing problem of counterfeit and synthetic diamonds entering the market. The establishment of DDRC underscores the country’s commitment to maintaining the integrity and transparency of its diamond industry.
As part of a broader initiative, the DDRC is designed to collaborate with global diamond organizations in the fight against the misrepresentation of synthetic diamonds as natural ones. The center will be equipped with advanced tools for rapid and accurate detection of synthetic stones, ensuring that only genuine diamonds reach the market. This not only helps protect consumers but also supports the long-term health and stability of the diamond sector.
In addition to testing capabilities, the DDRC will serve as an educational hub, offering training on the identification of synthetic diamonds and how to use the testing equipment effectively. It will also take over some responsibilities from De Beers' global diamond sales division, playing a key role in the development of a more robust global diamond inspection system.
The situation in India’s diamond market was particularly unstable in the second half of 2013, with many businesses struggling to differentiate between real and synthetic stones. In November alone, two major Indian diamond companies were found to have imported large quantities of synthetic diamonds disguised as natural ones, causing significant damage to the industry’s reputation.
Vipul Shah, Chairman of the GJEPC, emphasized that the creation of DDRC is a crucial response to these challenges. He stated that it not only addresses current concerns about counterfeit diamonds but also reinforces the industry’s commitment to ethical practices and quality standards.
Varda Shine, Executive Vice President of Global Diamond Sales at De Beers, expressed satisfaction with the initiative, noting that the DDRC would enhance consumer trust in the authenticity of diamonds and strengthen the supply chain.
Aniruddha Lidbide, a diamond industry analyst, highlighted the importance of ethical conduct in the industry’s growth. He pointed out that cities like Surat and Mumbai had suffered substantial losses due to the influx of fake diamonds. According to him, the DDRC is more than just a testing center—it's a step toward building a stronger, more ethical diamond market by promoting responsible business values and discouraging the sale of low-quality synthetic stones to unsuspecting customers.
