Guangdong Dongguan Sinopec canteen gas leak explosion has caused 4 deaths

Located on the fourth floor of Block B, Zhongqiao Building in Dongguan, Guangdong Province, a gas explosion occurred at the Sinopec staff canteen on March 3. According to an announcement from the Municipal Safety Production Committee on March 16, the incident has resulted in 4 fatalities and 29 injuries. Currently, 12 injured individuals are still hospitalized, with 2 in critical condition.

In response to the tragedy, Dongguan launched a one-month comprehensive gas safety inspection aimed at identifying and addressing potential hazards in the catering industry and collective canteens. The city also intensified public awareness campaigns on gas safety practices. As part of this initiative, the Dongguan City Safety Committee will deploy 11 inspection teams by the end of the month to oversee and supervise local towns and streets in ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Mo Yanquan, Director of the Dongguan City Bureau of Safety Supervision, emphasized that the investigation into the Zhongqiao Tower explosion will be expedited. He stated that the responsibility of the involved organizations and individuals will be thoroughly examined, and the case will be used as a cautionary example to reinforce the sense of duty among business owners and enterprises. This effort aims to promote better safety awareness and encourage companies to take their responsibilities more seriously.

According to recent statistics, from January to February this year, Dongguan recorded a total of 595 production-related accidents, resulting in 63 deaths, 672 injuries, and economic losses amounting to RMB 807,900. Among these, 591 were road traffic accidents, a 71 increase compared to the same period last year, causing the highest number of casualties. Additionally, three industrial and mining accidents led to three deaths, while one water traffic accident resulted in one fatality.
