Paper gypsum board performance characteristics

The gypsum board is crafted from natural gypsum and face paper, combined with light fibers, starch, coagulants, foaming agents, and water. As a modern building material, gypsum board offers several distinct advantages in terms of performance:

(1) Low energy consumption and high productivity: Producing gypsum board requires significantly less energy compared to cement—about 78% less. Additionally, the initial investment is relatively low, with large-scale production capabilities, simple processes, and ease of mass manufacturing.

(2) Lightweight: Using paper-faced gypsum boards as partitions results in a weight that's just 1/15th of a brick wall of equal thickness and 1/10th of a block wall. This reduces structural strain during earthquakes and helps cut costs on foundations and structures.

(3) Excellent thermal insulation: Approximately 60% of the gypsum board’s core consists of tiny air pockets. Air has low thermal conductivity, making gypsum boards great insulators.

(4) Superior fire resistance: Gypsum cores themselves are non-flammable, and they release bound water during combustion, absorbing significant heat and slowing temperature increases around them. According to tests by the National Fire Detection Center, a gypsum board partition wall can withstand fires for up to four hours.

(5) Outstanding acoustic properties: A single-layer wall made from lightweight materials like aerated concrete or expanded perlite boards can provide adequate soundproofing if thick enough. However, gypsum board partitions offer a unique cavity design that enhances sound insulation.

(6) Great decorative potential: The smooth surface of gypsum boards allows seamless joints between panels, creating a clean finish ready for direct decoration.

(7) Easy handling and excellent workability: Gypsum boards are easy to nail, plane, saw, and glue, making them ideal for interior decoration projects. Their versatility improves both aesthetics and construction efficiency.

(8) Comfort-enhancing functionality: With its high porosity and well-distributed pores, gypsum boards allow for better airflow. They absorb moisture when indoor humidity is high and release stored water when it’s dry, helping maintain comfortable humidity levels. This “breathing” feature makes living spaces more pleasant.

(9) Eco-friendly: Made from natural gypsum and paper without harmful substances like asbestos (unlike many calcium silicate boards or cement fiberboards), gypsum boards promote sustainability.

(10) Space-efficient: Paper-faced gypsum boards can serve as walls as thin as 74mm while maintaining effective soundproofing and fireproofing qualities.

Thanks to these benefits—such as being lightweight, fire-resistant, soundproof, thermally efficient, easy to work with, and space-saving—gypsum boards find widespread application in both commercial and residential constructions, particularly in high-rise buildings. They’re commonly used for non-load-bearing walls in frame structures, interior finishes, ceilings, and more.
