In contrast, a double-acting vane pump has a stator with a more complex profile, typically consisting of two long-radius arcs, two short-radius arcs, and four transition curves. The rotor and stator are concentric, and as the rotor rotates, two separate suction and pressure zones are created per revolution. This results in two cycles of suction and discharge per rotation, hence the term “double-acting.” Because of its symmetrical design, the radial forces acting on the rotor are balanced, making it a “balanced” pump. Additionally, when the number of vanes is a multiple of four (commonly 12 or 16), the flow rate becomes more uniform, reducing pulsation. This makes double-acting vane pumps ideal for applications requiring smoother operation. Whether single-acting or double-acting, vane pumps are widely used in hydraulic systems due to their simplicity, efficiency, and reliability.
