A recent study published in the American Journal of Pediatrics warns that choosing excessively soft bedding increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Dr. Rachel Munn from the National Children’s Medical Center at George Washington University found that more than half of new mothers use soft materials to keep their babies warm and comfortable, often without realizing the potential dangers.
Dr. Munn emphasized that soft pillows and blankets can block a baby’s airway, leading to suffocation. In addition, some parents place thick cushions along the sides of the crib, believing this will protect the baby from injury. However, the study revealed that these cushions may actually contribute to accidental injury or even death.
Dr. Fern Howe from the University of Virginia’s SIDS Research Program advises against using soft mattresses or pillows in a baby’s crib. She suggests that firmer surfaces are safer and better for a baby’s development. The pillow should be soft but not too dense, and breathable materials like buckwheat husks, wick grass, or even dried tea leaves can be great alternatives.
