In the traditional Chinese practice of handling ancient jade, there are three main methods: the urgent method, the slow disk method, and the intentional method. The urgent method involves wearing the jade close to the body, allowing it to absorb the natural heat and moisture from the skin. Over time, as the jade is worn for several months, its texture becomes harder. At this stage, you can gently wipe it with a clean, old cloth, bringing out a subtle sheen before finishing with a new cloth.
It's important to use white or coarse fabric rather than colored ones. The more you rub the jade, the warmer it becomes, so consistency is key. This process helps reduce the dullness and dryness caused by lime soil, gradually revealing the natural color beneath. As time passes, the jade’s luster becomes more refined and intrinsic.
Although the term "urgent" might suggest speed, the process actually requires patience. In addition to the urgent method, the second approach is known as the slow disk method. This involves keeping the jade close to the body—often tied around the waist—to allow it to slowly absorb the body’s energy over time. This method demands patience and perseverance, often taking two to three years before noticeable color changes appear. It’s a way of cultivating virtue and character, much like an ancient practice of self-cultivation.
For jades that have been buried in the earth for over a decade, restoration may be possible. According to experts in the field, jade from the Qin and Han dynasties could regain their original luster after being worn at the waist for ten years or more. However, for even older pieces, such as those from the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, it may take decades—sometimes over sixty years—before they begin to show signs of recovery.
Some Warring States period jades, for example, need at least twenty years of wear after excavation to restore their original beauty. As the ancients said, “Jade from the Shang dynasty should be worn for a lifetime.†Whether using the hot plate or slow disk method, the longer the jade remains buried, the more difficult it becomes to return to its original color, as the earth’s influence seeps deeper into the stone.
Those who rush the process risk damaging the jade. Wearing just a few pieces for a short time may help build patience, but true mastery of the slow disk technique requires time and dedication. The third method, the intentional approach, is one I personally prefer. It involves direct contact with the jade, showing deep care and respect. Ancient scholars also valued this method, believing that the virtue of jade could shape one’s character, purify the soul, and bring sincerity and clarity.
This method can be combined with the slow disk technique. The Italian-style approach involves holding and rubbing the jade by hand, which is both meaningful and valuable. As the ancients believed, the qualities of jade could transform one’s temperament, leading to a life free from selfish desires and filled with honesty. Just like writing with a fine pen, this method may seem puzzling to some, but it requires persistence—and few truly master it.
