Rice Experts Successfully Breed Super Northeast Rice to Realize Two-season Planting

In an interview with reporters in Shenyang on the 5th, Zhou Xiaodong, a senior scientist at the National Institute of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture, shared insights from over a decade of research. He revealed that through advanced breeding techniques, he successfully developed a super-early rice variety that matures in just 80 days. This breakthrough has enabled double-crop rice farming in Liaoning province in laboratory settings, marking a significant step forward in agricultural innovation. Zhou noted that while the current method involves high costs and complex technology, it is expected to become viable for large-scale production within the next three to five years. This development could revolutionize traditional farming practices in the Northeast, where single-season rice planting has been the norm for centuries. September in Shenyang was a vibrant and hopeful time for Zhou, who is deeply involved in rice cultivation. Alongside agricultural experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Heilongjiang Farming Reclamation Bureau, he visited fields to inspect this year's rice yield, admiring the golden landscapes that symbolized success. Reflecting on the importance of sustainable agriculture, Zhou emphasized the need to protect land resources while boosting grain output. He warned that continued reliance on fertilizers without changing planting methods could threaten food security. According to Zhou, China’s agricultural future lies in scientific innovation—balancing land protection with increased productivity. If the Northeast achieves dual-season rice planting, it could significantly boost both harvests and yields. The 80-day rice variety, developed through years of research using wild domestication, mutagenesis, and space breeding techniques, offers a key advantage: a shortened growth cycle that reduces costs. Each acre can produce over 1,000 pounds in the first season, with up to 900 pounds in the second. In recent years, Liaozhong County in Shenyang has successfully implemented two rice crops per year, while in Sanya, Hainan, four seasons of planting have been recorded. The frost-free period in Shenyang, typically between 160 and 165 days, is perfectly suited for this early-maturing rice variety. Zhou's journey over the past decade has taken him across China, from 805 farms in Heilongjiang to Sanya, Anhui, and Shenyang. Every year, he travels nearly 100,000 kilometers across these regions, dedicating almost 10 months annually to fieldwork and experimentation. Historically, no one had dared to attempt such a feat, but Zhou has turned this dream into reality. He told reporters that his work has rewritten the history of rice cultivation in China. Currently, the rice base in Liaozhong County has already achieved two successful harvests, proving the feasibility of the new approach. Zhou emphasized that, although the initial costs are high and the technology is complex, the project is progressing steadily. Over the past ten years, the super-early rice has passed all necessary lab tests, showing strong adaptability for double-crop farming in the Northeast. With further improvements, he believes the technique will be widely adopted within 3 to 5 years, ushering in a new era for rice production in northern China.
