In an interview with reporters in Shenyang on the 5th, Zhou Xiaodong, a senior scientist at the National Institute of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture, revealed that after more than a decade of scientific research, he and his team have successfully developed a super-early rice variety that matures in just 80 days. This breakthrough has enabled double-crop rice farming in Liaoning Province, a significant achievement in agricultural science.
Zhou explained that although this method involves higher costs and technical complexity, it is expected to become viable for large-scale production within the next three to five years. The development of this short-cycle rice was the result of extensive research, including wild domestication, mutagenesis, and space breeding techniques. Its main advantage lies in reducing the growth cycle, which lowers planting costs and increases yield per acre—up to over 1,000 pounds in the first season and 900 pounds in the second.
September in Shenyang was a warm and vibrant time, marking the peak of Zhou's rice growing season. As an agricultural expert, he visited fields across the region, inspecting the year’s rice output and admiring the golden landscapes. He emphasized the importance of sustainable farming practices, warning that long-term use of chemical fertilizers could threaten food security if not addressed.
According to Zhou, China's agriculture must adopt a new scientific approach that protects land resources while ensuring stable grain production. If the northeastern region successfully implements dual-season rice planting, it could revolutionize traditional farming methods, leading to both better harvests and higher yields.
The 80-day rice variety is well-suited to Shenyang's frost-free period of 160 to 165 days, making it ideal for the region. Over the past ten years, Zhou has traveled extensively across China, from Heilongjiang to Hainan, conducting field trials and collecting data. Each year, he spends nearly ten months traveling between four regions, covering over 100,000 kilometers.
Historically, no one had ever considered or attempted two-season rice farming in the Northeast. But Zhou dared to dream and turned that vision into reality. His efforts have already led to successful two-season rice cultivation in Liaozhong County, proving that the old ways of farming can be rewritten.
Zhou noted that while the current cost and technical demands are high, the technology is advancing rapidly. In the next few years, this super-early rice could be fully promoted and adopted in the Northeast, opening a new chapter in rice cultivation and boosting food production in the region.
