In a recent investigation, reports of harmful products have surfaced across the region, particularly in home decoration materials. During a visit to Sanhuan Decoration City, Jiuzheng Building Materials Network learned that a wide variety of ceramic tiles are available on the market, including glazed tiles, vitrified tiles, polished tiles, and whole-body bricks. Prices vary significantly, and many consumers find it hard to decide which one is the best choice.
Zhang Xinquan, director of Foshan Ceramics Mall, explained that tile radiation levels are extremely low and pose little threat to health. Instead, he emphasized that consumers should focus more on quality aspects like gloss, flatness, and hardness when purchasing.
Many people still worry about radiation from decorative tiles and marble, even though they can't see or feel it. In the past, natural stone was a popular choice for home renovations due to its elegant texture. However, because it contains radioactive elements, its use has declined over time.
Today, alternatives like microcrystalline stone tiles are becoming more popular. These tiles closely resemble natural stone in appearance and offer better environmental protection. However, they come at a higher price—some 80×80 cm tiles can cost over 600 yuan, with some reaching thousands of yuan.
Zhang Xinquan added that standard tiles are made from clay, which means their radiation levels are negligible. He advised buyers to focus on quality rather than worrying about radiation. "When buying tiles, pay attention to gloss, flatness, density, and hardness," he said.
Mr. Wei, a tile-laying contractor with over ten years of experience, shared a tip: "Don’t go for overly white tiles. Some merchants add brighteners to make the surface look brighter, which may not be healthy."
Another common misconception is the belief that anti-slip tiles are always better. While there's ongoing debate about the safety of tiles, the anti-slip feature is often misunderstood. According to current national standards, there’s no official classification for slip resistance. The static friction coefficient test is recommended but not mandatory. This makes the so-called "anti-slip" tiles questionable in terms of actual effectiveness.
Zhang Xinquan noted that high-quality glazed and polished tiles often have better slip resistance without any safety issues. “Some so-called anti-slip tiles are just lower-quality products with a misleading label,†he said. “They may look rough, but they aren’t necessarily safer.â€
To help consumers choose wisely, Xiao Li, an eagle ceramics guide, suggested looking for four key qualities: gloss, flatness, density, and hardness. High-quality tiles have a natural, three-dimensional appearance with excellent shine. Their surfaces are smooth and even, making them easy to distinguish from inferior ones.
At the Jiangbei store of Foshan Ceramics Mall, the tiles displayed were noticeably thick, which Zhang Xinquan explained reflects their density and hardness. For the same size, thicker and heavier tiles are usually of higher quality. Lower-quality tiles tend to be lighter and less durable.
Professionals can even judge tile quality by tapping them and listening to the sound. For regular consumers, simply observing and touching the tiles is enough to determine their quality.
