The British Engineering Technology Society (IET), one of the world’s most prestigious engineering organizations, recently announced that Australian engineer Stuart Wenham has been awarded the IET AF Harvey Engineering Research Award for his groundbreaking work in developing high-performance, low-cost solar panels. The prize includes a generous bonus of up to £300,000, recognizing his significant contributions to renewable energy technology.
Professor Stuart Wenham from the University of New South Wales led a team that discovered an innovative method to address the limitations of silicon, which is traditionally expensive and often leads to lower-quality solar cells. By precisely controlling hydrogen atoms within the silicon structure, they were able to enhance its performance without relying on costly materials. This breakthrough not only improves efficiency but also significantly reduces production costs, making solar energy more accessible globally.
In a recent interview, Prof. Wenham expressed his deep gratitude for the recognition. “It’s an incredible honor to have our research acknowledged by the IET,†he said. “Our team at UNSW has long been at the forefront of silicon solar cell development. This new technique allows us to control the charge state of hydrogen in silicon, which opens the door to more efficient and affordable solar solutions. We’re now working with major manufacturers to bring this technology to market, and the award will help us take the next big step forward.â€

The AF Harvey Engineering Research Award, named after the late IET member Dr. A.F. Harvey, was established through a generous donation from Dr. Harvey himself. He created a trust fund to support excellence in engineering fields such as medical, microwave, laser, and radar technologies. Since its inception in 2011, the award has recognized outstanding engineering research from professionals worldwide.
In addition to the award, the IET continues to support the engineering community through various grants, scholarships, and funding opportunities. In 2013 alone, over £1 million was distributed in prizes and scholarships to recognize and encourage the next generation of engineers and technicians.
