[Biography]
Thomas Heatherwick, born in 1970 in the United Kingdom, is a renowned British designer and architect known for his innovative and creative approach to design. He studied 3D design at Manchester Polytechnic School before moving on to the Royal College of Art, where he earned his BA in 1994.
Recognized as one of the most imaginative minds in contemporary British design, Heatherwick has received numerous accolades throughout his career. At just 36, he won the prestigious Prince Philip Design Award—often referred to as the "Oscar of Engineering and Technology"—and became the youngest royal industrial designer in history. In 2010, he was honored with the Lubekin Prize by the Royal Institute of Architects. He is currently an honorary member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a senior member of the Royal College of Art. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the Royal College of Art, the University of Dundee, and the University of Manchester. In 2013, he was named a Royal Fellow of the Royal College of Art and received the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his contributions to the design industry.
In 1994, at the age of 24, Heatherwick founded Heatherwick Studio, with a vision to merge architecture, design, and sculpture into one cohesive practice. The studio works across multiple disciplines, including architecture, interior design, furniture, public art, and even fashion, reflecting his broad creative range.
Heatherwick's portfolio includes some of the most iconic designs of the 21st century. His work on the 2012 London Olympic Torch, with its elegant and symbolic flame, captured global attention.
