The effect of corn lodging on yield and measures

Corn is currently entering the jointing stage, and with the arrival of the rainy season, it becomes more vulnerable to lodging due to increased plant height and wind exposure.

Understanding the causes of corn lodging is essential for farmers to take preventive measures and manage crop health effectively.

First, let’s explore the main reasons behind corn lodging:

  1. Heavy rain after jointing can cause widespread lodging, especially when accompanied by strong winds. Corn plants above grade 5 are particularly at risk.

  2. Excessive plant height increases the likelihood of lodging, as taller plants are less stable in windy conditions.

  3. Overly dense planting can lead to lodging. For example, if the spacing between plants is between 6 to 8 inches, the risk increases significantly. Increasing the spacing to over 8.5 inches improves stability and reduces the chance of lodging.

Next, it's important to understand how to respond to corn lodging based on the timing of the event.

Lodging at different stages of growth has varying impacts on yield, so appropriate actions must be taken accordingly.

  1. Early-stage lodging occurs from the jointing stage up to 7 days before tasseling. During this time, the plant continues to grow, and if lodged, it may recover within 4–5 days (with base bending). It's not recommended to manually lift the plants, as this could increase the risk of secondary lodging. The earlier the lodging, the less impact on yield, typically reducing it by 10–30%.

  2. Mid-season lodging happens from 7 days before tasseling to the pollination period. At this stage, the plants have already grown tall and cannot self-right. Manual intervention is necessary, ideally within 3 days of lodging. Lifting the plants and tying them together in two rows can help expose the ears and improve pollination. However, if the roots are damaged, it may lead to further issues.

  3. Late-stage lodging occurs during grain filling or maturity. The earlier the lodging, the greater the yield loss. If it happens during the milk stage, prompt action is needed. However, if the plants are already mature, there is usually no need to lift them, as the damage is minimal.
